Trekking on Kodiak Island
Trekking on Kodiak Island,
Kodiak has unparalleled back country hiking opportunities. We offer different packages from one-day trips to weeklong excursions.
For a less demanding backcountry trek the high alpine meadows can be reached in as little as two hours. The terrain is filled with ankle high alpine grasses and a variety of wildflowers. Sitka Black-tailed deer can often be seen as well as the occasional brown bear. Birding opportunities and fantastic views are abundant. This trip will leave a lasting impression of where the mountains meet the ocean.
For a more demanding backcountry trek we offer a journey to the center of Kodiak Island. You can expect to traverse alpine meadows, steep rock ridges and snowfields. This is the heart of mountain goat country and the most rugged terrain on the island. If this trip is done in June, it is possible to see brown bears emerging from their winter dens. A minimum of three days is required for this type of trip.
It is possible to combine these trips with a stop over at our base camp for fishing and further bear viewing. If you plan to fish, remember to pick up a fishing license and bring a rod to catch some Silver Salmon. A fishing license can also be picked up in town before your trip starts.
